Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer, like all forms of cancer, is a life-threatening disease. Our approach at Gladstone Family Dentistry is to look for early signs of oral cancer as a part of our routine examinations. What happens if signs of oral cancer are detected?
If oral cancer is caught early, then there is a much greater chance that it can be successfully treated. Our highly skilled and observant dentists are trained to look for signs of oral cancer in our patients. Oral cancer has a very high survival rate if it is detected early. Unfortunately, that is often not the case because most people don’t participate in routine evaluations.
Oral cancer can appear in the form of lesions, lumps of ulcers in the mouth that don’t go away or dissipate after about two weeks. If a dentist recognizes an abnormality, then they will usually take a sample that can be tested further with a biopsy. There is usually no pain associated with the early stages of oral cancer, which makes it even harder to detect. About 75% of all forms of oral cancer are linked to the use of tobacco or excessive amounts of alcohol consumption, so if you smoke then it is even more important to have periodic oral evaluations.
